STAR WASHER

A washer is a type of fitting used to distribute the load of a threaded fastener such as a nut or bolt. Usually, they are disk-shaped or sometimes square-shaped with a hole. The application determines the placement of the hole in a washer.

Serrated washers are also known as tooth lock washer or star washer. The presence of serrations in such a manner that they extend radially inward or outward the component. Serrations present on the Washer bite into the bearing surface, which is why they tend to be well equipped as a lock type. In particular, during their use in conjunction with a soft substrate, like aluminum or plastic. Another reason for the preference of Star Lock Washers over plain washers is that they resist rotation more than the flat type on hard surfaces. The logic behind this is the presence of some form of tension. Tension, between Washer and the surface, exists over a much smaller area, the teeth. There are four types of star washers: internal, external, combination, as well as countersunk.

The serrations in an Internal Star Lock Washers are present the inner edge of the Washer, which is a feature that makes them more pleasing aesthetically. On the other hand, washers with serrations around the outer edge, are referred to as External washers. They are known to offer better holding power because the External Star Lock Washers has a greater circumference. The combination star lock wash has serrations on both edges, thus exhibiting maximum holding power. The design of a countersunk style star washer is suited for use with flat-head screws.
